Hampshire players returned from the Bristol Classic Open Judo tournament with a host of medals.

Fareham's Kieran Hughes, who fights for TNJC of Chichester, won gold in the 30kg weight division, beating his Moberley JC (Westminster) opponent with a cumulative score of waza-ari-awasete-ippon.

New Forest Park's Timothy Walker came back from a semi-final defeat to claim bronze in this weight group.

Andrew Gould (11), of Cosham's Court Lane Judo Club, won bronze at 34kg, when he held his opponent down on the edge of the contest area for the required 25 seconds.

Jonathan Spencer of Havant's Meridian JC won gold at 50kg, defeating David Kunzi by a yuko. Kunzi had beaten Court Lane's Brett Caswell (15) in his semi-final, but Caswell stormed back in the bronze medal fight to throw and hold Simon Marshall for ippon.

Emma Garside of Christchurch, who fights for Eastleigh's Fleming Park JC, had a tough first fight against 2001 national champion Ashley Down, losing on penalties. Garside came back through the repechage system to claim a bronze emdal at 52kg.

Three novice players from Cosham's Court Lane Judo Club attended the above competition - and came away with three medals!

Charlotte Tommans-Porter and Emily Nixon, making their competition debuts, returned home with a silver and a bronze respectively, Steven Devenport adding a second bronze.
