PICTURES from a bygone age in Andover feature in a new joint CD-ROM release from the Royal Aeronautical Society and Archive Britain in 'Aircraft of the 1920s'.

Andover, which had a 1950s aircraft named after it and was home to an RAF base until the 1970s, had close links to the air service until fairly recent times but the archive pictures date from a time in the distant past few can now recall.

The 1920s witnessed major advances in the design of aircraft seaplanes and flying boats in the quest to win contests such as the Schneider Trophy and the King's Cup.

The CR-ROM traces the development of those pioneering aircraft and includes pictures of the 1924 and 1925 air pageants held at Andover.

The 1925 photo shows a Boulton and Paul Bugle being inspected by a local crowd.

Archive Britain Campaign was set up in May 1999 to release a wealth of material stored in British archives for public consumption.

Each volume in the series is available for £11.44. They can be obtained from the Archive Britain website at www.archivebritain.com or on the credit card orderline 023 9275 6275.
