A MEMBER of New Forest District Council says the authority should break off relations with Southampton over the Dibden Bay controversy.

Marchwood councillor Nick Smith is a fierce critic of plans by Associated British Ports to build a huge container terminal on the western side of Southampton Water.

The district council is among the main objectors to the £600 million scheme.

But the proposed development has the full support of Southampton City Council, which says the massive dock development is vital to the city's prosperity.

The simmering row was raised at this week's meeting of the district council.

Cllr Smith said: "Southampton has demonstrated its total lack of concern for the people of the New Forest and how the proposed port will affect our lives.

"The City Council is trying to damage both the quality of life and the economic stability of the New Forest simply so it can benefit financially."

Cllr Smith said the council should sever all links with Southampton by taking various steps, including cancelling any joint meetings.

He added: "Could we also consider placing a road sign on the Redbridge fly-over stating 'You are now leaving Southampton and entering the New Forest' to remind people that the Waterside is part of the New Forest and not Southam-pton?"

Southampton councillor Julian Price, pictured above, said: "There is a difference in opinion between the two councils over Dibden Bay, but this shouldn't mean an all-encompassing end to the relationship.

"We're working on economic and other issues together, and I wouldn't expect one clash like this to cause a break in relations."

New Forest council leader Simon Hayes said: "I don't think it would be in our long- term interests to break off relations with Southampton."

Cllr Hayes said there had always been friction between the two councils and a better working relationship would enable the city council to understand the problems a large port development would bring to the Forest.

"I hope we will enjoy a better relationship than we've had in the past," he said.
