THERE was a magical scene at Oakley Infant School as children celebrated a St Lucia Swedish Christmas assembly.
Everyone got into the spirit of Christmas as the pupils sang Swedish songs in the school hall, which was lit by candles and decorated with models of Santa.
Headteacher Wendy Tully said the St Lucia assembly has been a tradition at the school for about 10 years and was started by Swedish learning assistant Pia Warne.
The festive assembly was held on December 13, the day Swedes celebrate St Lucia's Day. According to Wendy, it signals the start of Christmas in Sweden.
The assembly re-enacted the story of a little girl who died young but, because she was particularly good, was made a saint.
St Lucia was played by seven-year-old Claire Reis.
The children enjoyed ginger biscuits which, tradition says, have the power to make youngsters good.
Wendy said the assembly was great fun and educational.
"It introduces the children to the way other cultures celebrate Christmas - it's very important they experience that for themselves."
