TWO cars collided head-on at a Stubbington accident blackspot -- reigniting calls for traffic calming measures in the area.

A Ford Fiesta and a Range Rover were involved in the collision at a notorious part of Titchfield Road at 2.46pm on Tuesday.

The accident happened near Anzac Close, only yards from the spot where a ten-year-old boy died after being struck on the head by the hydraulic arm of a passing lorry last year.

Residents have campaigned for years for speed restrictions in the road, which they say is too narrow to cope with the volume of traffic it carries.

Both the Range Rover and the Fiesta were severely damaged in yesterday's crash, although no one was badly injured. The front drivers' sides of both cars were badly crumpled in the strike.

The middle-aged male driver of the Range Rover was taken by ambulance to Queen Alexandra Hospital for treatment for shock and suspected seat belt injuries to his shoulder.

Two young girls were in the Fiesta. Although the car's bonnet was completely mangled in the crash, both were able to walk from the car.

They were too upset to talk about the incident.

A police officer, attending the accident, said: "It appears one of the vehicles had overtaken a slower moving one, losing control and colliding into another."

Resident Sonja Blackman, whose house is right next to the accident scene, said the accident took place at a blind spot, where drivers find it difficult to tell what is coming in the opposite direction.

She said there had been at least two accidents in the past year along the road.

Mrs Blackman has been campaigning for traffic lights to be installed, stopping traffic from travelling in both directions at the same time.

She said: "There will be more accidents along here unless traffic lights are put in. If that is what happens to a Range Rover, what is it going to do to me?"

Anyone who witnessed the accident is urged to call Fareham police on 0845 0454545.
