Hedge End's historic carnival is still alive and kicking after volunteers stepped in to save the 80-year-old event from going under.

A crisis meeting was called earlier this month amid fears that there were no longer enough people to run the carnival which has raised thousands of pounds for good causes.

Newly re-elected carnival chairman Nick Wise admitted: "For many years just a few people have struggled to organise the carnival and when only two people attended a meeting when committee officers are elected it looked like the end."

But after organising the crisis meeting as a "last throw of the dice" to save Hedge End's one great tradition, the carnival bandwagon is rolling again and the grand procession will once again be taking to the streets on the first Saturday in July.

Mr Wise said: "Eleven extra people - more than have ever been on the committee in recent times - have said that they are willing to help and some have already taken on specific tasks and are working away behind the scenes to try and keep Hedge End carnival the best in the area.

"Things are looking up for the people of Hedge End and we are hoping for a really good turnout in 2002. Those of us who can remember the Queen's silver jubilee will recall how good the community spirit and carnival were that year. The golden jubilee should be even more special - and what better way could there be of celebrating than joining in the fun?"

Hedge End's carnival will be on Saturday, July 6 and revellers can already check out details on the web at www.communigate.co.uk/hants/hedgeendcarnival or by calling the carnival information line: 01489 785041.
