A MAJOR traffic-calming scheme has been launched on a Totton housing estate that has been plagued by speeding drivers.

Hampshire County Council has taken action to force drivers to stick to the 30mph limit at Calmore Drive, Calmore.

The work has been carried out between a roundabout on the A36 and Blackwater Drive following a series of accidents.

The road coming off the roundabout has been reduced in width to encourage drivers to cut their speed as they enter the estate.

A chicane has been installed near Blackwater Drive in a further attempt to persuade motorists to slow down.

The chicane comprises small obstructions known as build-outs, which have been placed opposite the end of footpaths leading to the road.

They narrow the carriageway, reducing traffic speed and making it easier for pedestrians to cross.

Leaflets distributed in the area say the scheme follows a public meeting at which Calmore residents highlighted the dangers being caused by fast traffic.

It adds: "The county council has been working with the town council and local representatives to develop a scheme to address priority issues.

"This will concentrate on the section of Calmore Drive between the A36 and Blackwater Drive, since this has the highest concentration of injury accidents."

Totton councillor George Dart praised the scheme at a meeting of the town council's planning and transport advisory committee.

He said: "Lots of residents have been pressing the authorities to improve safety for pedestrians, motorists and residents."

The current scheme comprises temporary kerbs and bollards.

Senior highways technician Martin Wiltshire said the measures would be monitored over the next few weeks and made permanent if they were considered successful.

He added: "Calmore Drive does have an accident record. It's not too serious, but concerns have been expressed."
