Things went from bad to worse for Graham Rix and Portsmouth as they slumped to their third successive defeat, 1-0 at Millwall last night.
Violence once again reigned off the pitch while, on it, Rix faces increased pressure to save his job and Lee Bradbury could miss the rest of the season after badly injuring his knee.
On this occasion, the crowd trouble, which had flared in the stadium at Coventry earlier in the season, was restricted to Waterloo train station pre-match and the surrounding streets after the game.
Scores of riot police with batons and shields and wearing body armour roamed the streets and cut off access points to try and keep the waring fans apart as bricks - and any other missile they could find - were hurled at each other and the police.
On the pitch, it was an all too familiar story for Pompey - dominate much of the game but make one poor defensive error and end up losing.
But Rix insisted: "I don't feel under pressure.
"I want us to win the matches, but I thought we played well and that's why I am so disappointed for the guys, because I thought they put a lot of effort in.
"We deserved something out of the game but it's just not running for us at the moment at either end.
"But for us to come to a place like Millwall and play some of the stuff we played, I was delighted with the guys. Their attitude was spot on."
The match looked to be heading for 0-0 draw despite being open and entertaining.
Steve Claridge was unable to condemn his old side with an audacious 20-yard first-half lob which hit the crossbar.
Kevin Harper went closest for Pompey when he struck the post only moments before half-time.
But it was a case of same old, same old for the goal, which again looked to be down to a lack of communication from Japanese speaking goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi and non-Japanese speaking defender Carl Tiler.
Having committed a few howlers between the pair of them over the last three games, things took a further turn for the farcical when, in the 78th minute, Yoshi came to attempt to catch a Millwall free-kick.
The ball was headed out of his hands by Tiler, only to Richard Sadlier, who duly vollyed into an empty net.
To round it all off, Bradbury was caught by a fair tackle from Ryan Green on the edge of the area and was immediately stretchered off looking in some considerable pain and holding his right knee.
How serious the injury is will not be confirmed until the weekend.
