MORE than £7,000 was raised in memory of a young Andover sportsman who died of leukaemia on Christ-mas Day two years ago.
Over 130 relatives and friends of 27-year-old Andrew Collins took part in a sponsored bike ride in the New Forest in September. The money was handed over for the Leukaemia Research Fund at a gathering in Amport cricket pavilion.
Andrew, the only child of Fran and Ray Collins, of Amport, had been a leading member of the cricket team. His death after a marathon struggle against the condition touched many hearts. He was also known through his job as an advertising representative for the Andover Advertiser.
The cheque was received by Gillian Bond, representing the fund, who said the organisation was financing treatment of certain leukaemias at Salisbury hospital, so cutting down arduous journeys for some patients to Southampton and London.
Fran Collins said she and her husband had been 'absolutely overwhelmed' by the amount of money collected in memory of their son.
Dennis O'Neil, organiser of the ride, is hoping to repeat event next September.
