YOUNG people across Southampton's inner city have been rewarded for their efforts and achievements by a new scheme.
The Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award, named after the last king of India, has been launched by the Gurdwara temples in Southampton.
It will also be used as a stepping stone for youngsters to get on to the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme.
A special ceremony at the Gurdwara Nanaksar, Peterborough Road, was held to honour the first winners of the Maharaja Ranjit certificate.
John Roath, representative for the city's Council of Gurdwaras, said: "It's not just for the Sikh community but for the Southampton community as a whole.
"We gave one to a guy who has just got a degree. There was another who has just got a job in customs and excise in the city, and is one of the first Asians in Southampton to get into that role.
"We hope this award scheme will develop people's skills and encourage them to do positive things in the community."
Southampton mayor Chris Kelly presented the certificates, which were also given to older members of the community who have acted as role models for youngsters.
