As the festive season approaches, and parties become par for the course, Hampshire Police are reminding the public not to drink and drive.
Police are urging motorists to think about the consequences of their actions, to be responsible and make alternative transportation arrangements for their own safety as well as that of other road users and pedestrians.
Hampshire Constabulary is reminding everyone:
* Don't drink and drive; the personal and social consequences can be horrific.
* Plan ahead and make sure you have organised a safe journey home.
* Be aware that you may still be unsafe to drive the day after heavy alcohol consumption.
Road Safety Inspector Peter Hughes is urging people not to drink and drive and to challenge others intending to do so. He said: "If you intend be a passenger in a car with a driver you know to have been drinking, do not travel with them and encourage them to also take alternative means of transport.
"It is not only at the time of consumption that people should be aware of the effects of drinking and driving, but often many hours later and sometimes the next morning."
Over 450 people were breathalysed last year as a result of road collisions where 171 people were injured. Thirty seven of these breath-tests were positive.
Added Inspector Hughes: "Despite warnings all year round and knowing how dangerous it is, some drivers still act irresponsibly. The festive season is a time for fun, but there's no fun in drinking and driving."
