KEN PRIOR produced a major upset in the English Indoor BA singles championship by beating East Dorset's Chris Martin.
What was even more impressive about the Banister Park bowler's performance was that he achieved his 21-17 victory at Christchurch over a Hampshire's Liberty Trophy regular.
Prior made a flying start and, although he fell 16-12 down, he fought back to bag a place in the area quarter-finals.
But his Banister Park colleague Barry Bendall failed to join him in the last eight as he lost to Terry Chivers of East Dorset, and Dennis Shipp (Five Rivers) went out to Mike Beales (Bournemouth).
Graham Standley and his Long-meadow partner Andy Ross sailed through their pairs encounter, 22-9 against Dave Edmonds and Dink Mintrum (Atherley).
In the triples, an all-Atherley contest saw Kerry Clements, Allan Arnaud and Iain Bunday edge past David Bishop, Ray Wilkinson and Colin Stark 17-16 after an extra end, while Steve Cleverley, Mick Spreadbury and Denny Graydon (Atherley) outgunned Michael Comley, Malcolm Comley and Steve Whitehead (Banister Park) 15-9.
There were victories for Peter Ward (against Chris Daniels of Bournemouth) and Shipp (against Alan Rowe from Atherley), Standley (against Keith Cole of Atherley) in the mixed fours.
John Joslin (Banister Park) fell to Bob Tappin (East Dorset) in the area semi-final of the over-60s singles - the other tie between Eddie Bates (Riverside) and Danny McEwan (Banister Park) has yet to be played.
It's an internal battle for two Riverside bowlers in the area final of the under-25 singles with Simon Doig meeting Luke Young, Doig having gone through against Michael Hutley (Dolphin).
Doig is also going strong in the generation pairs with his father George.
The Doigs' latest victims were Mike and Patrick Lawson (Atherley) and that victory set up an area semi-final date with Mick and Steve Spreadbury (Atherley).
The other semi-final pitches Thomas and David Bishop against Bournemouth's Clive Bunford.
The Bishops put out fellow Atherley pair Simon and Geoff Lawson and Bunford overcame his Bournemouth colleague Chris Daniels.
The line-up for the area semi-finals of the over-50 triples is: Peter Line (Atherley) v Derek Ames (Dolphin) and McEwan (Banister Park) against Chivers (East Dorset).
Victory tumbled out of the Denny Cup 89-62 to East Dorset.
Although Peter Hobday (20-12 against Russell Morgan) and Dorian Bishop (20-16 against Julian Haines) won at Ports-mouth, it all went wrong for Victory at Christchurch, where Colin Hayward was thrashed 36-12 by Kevin Cousins and Darren Griffith slumped 25-10 to Martyn Sekjer.
The latest match in the Hampshire Mini League saw Palmerston step up their title bid with a 34-24 victory over Atherley.
The Fareham club, who have now won two matches out of two, took both rinks with Ben Settle beating Craig Harris 19-11, and Lee Trowern defeating Andrew Snook 15-13.
