King's Somborne 2 Liss Ath 3

KING'S Somborne's run in the Trophyman Cup came to an heartbreaking end when they bowed out to a last minute goal from Hants Premier side Liss Athletic last Saturday.

Terry Harfield's brave Somborne cup battlers, who had already beaten three premier teams, were never overawed by an excellent Liss side but were always chasing the game after a dreadful start saw them trailing as early as the fifth minute after conceding a penalty.

The rest of the first half was a tight closely fought affair with nothing to choose between the teams. After the break Somborne deservedly levelled terms when Charlie Spencer proved too quick for the Liss defence and Somborne were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty themselves when Steve Jones looked to be pulled back in the area.

Liss edged in front again only or player-manager Harfield tobring himself on to rifle home Somborne's second equaliser with a deadly accurate free kick from the edgeof the area.

Both sides had chances to win the game and it looked to be heading towards extra time until the last minute when Liss threw everyone forward after being awarded a free kick and they got the run of the ball with the winner coming in the ensuing goalmouth scramble.

It was a cruel end to a memorable cup time watched by a good crowd, including a number of Hants League officials, and Somborne are expecting another good turnout this Saturday for their Hants Division Two top-of-the-table clash when they entertain league leaders Laverstock & Ford (2pm).
