THERE are about 12,500 people living in the borough of Eastleigh looking after someone who is sick, frail or disabled.
Community chiefs fear that many could miss out on key reforms introduced this year.
Carers are often unaware of their rights and the Carers Centre at Eastleigh Community Services is anxious that carers should know of changes to benefits and services.
The message has been underlined with a Carers' Rights Day.
The new rights and entitlements include discretionary powers given to local authorities to provide direct services, such as housework and gardening, for carers based on their own need. Direct payments may also be made to carers to pay for these services.
Other improvements include an increase in the earnings limit on invalid care allowance which will now increase every year in line with inflation.
Improvements have also been made to the Carer Premium, giving extra support, giving extra support to those on a low income.
Carers who want information about the new entitlements can order a free Carers Rights' Pack by calling Carers UK on 020 7566 7610 or can contact their local Carers Centre, on 023 8090 2421 for a copy.
Centre manager Linda Wilson says: "Our aim is to ensure that every carer in Eastleigh borough who stands to gain from these rights is aware of them.
"Too many carers struggle on alone, unaware of the help and support available."
