A MEMORIAL service was taking place today for a Southampton University law student who plunged 150ft to his death from a hall of residence.
Hundreds of students and staff from the university's law faculty were expected to cram into a lecture theatre to pay their last respects to 25-year-old Arjit Banerjee, who died after falling from South Stoneham House last week.
This afternoon's memorial service was taking place at the same time as Arjit's family were attending his funeral in Middlesbrough.
Southampton University spokeswoman Joyce Lewis said Arjit had been a popular student and the service, organised by friends, would include music and readings.
Mourners were gathering before the service under a tree where the third-year student could often be seen sitting during the summer months. Arjit, from Teeside, fell from the 15th floor of South Stoneham House in Wessex Lane, Swaythling, last Thursday morning.
His body was found outside the tower block around 9am as students were leaving the halls for lectures. All those living in the block, as well as university staff, have been offered counselling as a result of the tragedy.
Police said there were no suspicious circumstances about the incident.
Det Sgt Bob Bowness, of Southampton Central CID, said: "This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the young man's family at this difficult time.
"We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter."
The coroner's office has been informed of the incident and an inquest will take place in due course.
