TWO of Hampshire-based stable owner David Elsworth's backroom staff were yesterday presented with the prestigious 'Stable Staff of the Year' award.
Rodney Boult and Peter Maughan, stalwarts of the yard which saw Rhyme 'n Reason gallop to Grand National glory and Desert Orchid record a record four King George VI chase wins, received the award for a lifetime of dedication to racing from the Horserace Writers and Photographers' Association.
Held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel, London, it is the first time that the award has been shared.
Boult, 65, has been involved in racing for most of his life and has been connected with the Elsworth camp for over 20 years.
Liverpool-born Boult, now in his second stint at the stables, regards himself as very fortunate to be involved with so many champion horses and he still rides out every day. He said: "My first year in racing was 1952 when I was at Newmarket. There was a bit of magic-and to me the magic has carried on ever since. I love horses, I love riding and I love the game."
With over 18 years service, Peter Maughan still loves the job. He explained: "I just love racing and going racing and can honestly say I have enjoyed every moment of my work."
Elsworth, whose successes include Desert Orchid and Barnbrook, paid tribute, saying: "I have been lucky to have had nearly 40 years combined service from them. They have been in the racing business most of their lives and are associated with our best horses.
"Peter is first in the yard every morning and his enthusiasm never diminishes. No one person was more responsible for the success of Desert Orchid than Rodney, who was involved with the success of so many others like Dead Certain, Mighty Fly and Indian Ridge. I consider myself very lucky to have had them work for me."
Jockey Colin Brown, whose 292 National Hunt winners included many for Elsworth, added: "It is marvellous to see two people like Rodney and Peter receive the award for their loyalty to David."
Those sentiments were echoed by Richard Burridge, spokesman of Dessie's owners: "I am delighted that they have won this award and it is thoroughly deserved."
This year's ceremony was held in association with Blue Square. Both winners received a £500 prize.
