LATE-night drinkers in Southampton can avoid the taxi queues from tonight when a new night bus service begins.
The Nightlink service will operate for a three-month trial period from midnight until 2.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.
It will have pick-up points around the city centre and will travel to the east and west of the city, including Bitterne, Millbrook and Thornhill.
Buses will be equipped with security cameras and a direct link to the police - and a guard will also be on board.
The project is funded by the city council and Hampshire police and is being backed by First Southampton and pub and nightclub bosses.
Southampton Itchen MP John Denham said: "Southampton has a vibrant nightlife and it is important that our city has a night bus service to provide people with a safe and cheap journey home after a night-out.
"This is an excellent example of how community safety is being improved through partnership between the council, police and the business community."
Timetables will be available from pubs and clubs across the city.
