VOLUNTEERS are needed to support a scheme in Southampton's inner city that is hoping to kick youth crime into touch.

The Newtown Football Academy, launched in the summer, has proved a big hit with soccer-mad kids from all cultures.

But the scheme has proved so successful that new coaches are needed to help run teams and organise games for the youngsters.

Jazz Bhatti, project leader, said: "We are using football as a vehicle to empower young people within the local community and give them the opportunity to be involved with something positive in a safe environment.

"It's not just about football as this also helps them mix with other kids from different backgrounds and learn more about each other.

"We really want to encourage integration between the different cultures in Southampton.

"We've already set up teams to play in competitive leagues but because we have so many kids turning up not everyone can get a game all the time, so we really need more volunteers and coaches to help."

The group was given a £5,000 boost when it was first launched with funding from the National Lottery and coaching training sessions are available for volunteers.

Mr Bhatti said he hoped the academy would eventually produce an Asian professional footballer.

"Although we are campaigning for the introduction of more Asian footballers, the academy will not solely restrict itself to Asian participants.

"We need to encourage racial integration among the community and help educate the importance of racial equality to achieve a multi-cultural society."
