TRIBUTES were paid today to a young law student who plunged 150ft to his death from a Southampton tower block.
The 25-year-old was certified dead outside Stoneham House halls of residence in Wessex Lane, Swaythling, after falling from the 15th floor yesterday morning.
A post-mortem examination was due to take place at Southampton General Hospital today.
Meanwhile the student's devastated parents were travelling to Southampton from their home in the West Midlands.
As reported in later editions of yesterday's Daily Echo, police have stressed there are no suspicious circumstances about the tragedy but are keen to trace any witnesses.
Det Sgt Bob Bowness said: "This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the young man's family at this difficult time. We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter."
A bouquet bearing the message "Forever in our thoughts" was placed outside the block near the spot where the victim died.
Last night students living in accommodation at Wessex Lane spoke of their shock at the tragedy.
Alexis Purdy, 19, who is studying nursing, said: "I first heard about it from a friend. It's just surprising no-one knew anything was wrong before this happened. I just feel lucky I've always had people to talk to."
Michelle Hardyman, 18, a biochemistry student, said: "It's just really sad that someone had problems so bad that they wanted to kill themselves."
Law student Stuart Hyden, 18, said: "Work has been getting tough in the run-up to Christmas but nothing too major. It's a big shock."
Matt Shoebridge, 20, who is studying biochemistry, said: "People are just going to be walking around not knowing what to do."
It is understood several students were nearby when the incident happened around 9.30am.
University officials have said counselling would be offered to any students badly affected by the tragedy.
