A PETITION to save Beechdown Primary School from being rebuilt on another site or closing altogether is being backed by MP Andrew Hunter.

The different options being considered for the future of the arson-hit Brighton Hill school were given to the media by Hampshire County Council last week. Mr Hunter, who supports rebuilding the school, said: "I have not yet heard any compelling arguments why it should not be rebuilt.

"I always see schools as much more than just places for academic work and more as centres of communities. In that respect, Beechdown is important in Brighton Hill."

Parents received an apology from Chris Holt, county education officer, at a public meeting held on Tuesday, for not being sent information about the proposals for the school before the media.

Since hearing the news, concerned parents have been rallying together to save their school.

Hundreds of people have already pledged their support by signing one of five petitions being circulated around the Brighton Hill area, including one at Homebase.

Cllr Phil Heath, chairman of the county's regulatory committee, said: "I'm actually very positive that we will get Beechdown rebuilt where it is.

"When the council is spending millions, they've got to scrutinise and show they've looked at every option, from not rebuilding to going bigger.

"Myself and county council leader Ken Thornber have both said Beechdown will be rebuilt and we're still adamant about that."

A full consultation meeting is to take place at Bishop Challoner School on December 18, at 6pm, and a decision is due to be made on the school's future next May.
