Fareham opened their South Premier Hockey League challenge with a ten-goal thriller against Wimbledon - the Surrey club scoring twice in the last three minutes to salvage a 5-5 draw.
But, earlier in a match full of twists and turns, Fareham found themselves two-goals behind and, according to team coach Steve Godwin "seemingly out of it".
Fareham switched formation at the break - the revamped 4-4-2 formation sweeping Wimbledon aside with four goals in a scintilating ten minute spell.
Former Andover player, Aaron Walker, and Scott Shirley both scored twice as Fareham went 4-2 up, only to allow Wimbledon back into the game with a third goal eight minutes from time.
Matin Fripp's fifth looked set to bag the points for Fareham at 5-3 - but then the Dons salvaged the match late on.
Fareham's Dave Cousins won't want to remember the game in a hurry. He turned up at half-time and, within ten minutes of coming on as substitute, was yellow carded.
Cousins did at least have the satisfaction of getting back on to the pitch to set up Fripp's fifth Fareham goal.
Andover got the fright of their lives when Wokingham, last season's Premier Division 1 fall guys, snatched a 2-1 lead.
But Andover redressed the balance to win their Hants/Surrey Regional clash 9-3.
Craig Smith notched four of the goals, Andy Winnett a hat-trick, and Paul Kavanagh and Rob Oostendorp one each as Andover took their season's goal tally to 29 in five unbeaten games.
James Wakeley was Winchester's two-goal hero against Basingstoke - his winning strike coming just five minutes from time.
Looking much sharper and disciplined than in previous seasons, Winchester bossed the first half, hitting the woodwork and being denied on several occasions by the Basingstoke goalkeeper before Wakeley scored after Nick Tout's good work.
Basingstoke hit back to deservedly equalise but, spurred on by Doim Walker and star man Charlie Swann, Winchester hit back to snatch a late winner, with Tout again the provider for Wakeley's winning goal.
Midweek training sessions at Stoneham Lane are likely to be stepped up after Trojans let slip a two-goal advantage and lost 3-2 to Hampshire League Division 1 rivals Fleet.
Relegated from the Regional League last season, Trojans appeared to be cruising to victory with goals either side of half-time by John Cowie and Chris Rhodes.
But Fleet capitalised as Trojans tired - the North Hampshire side twice scoring from short corners on the way to a 3-2 win.
Eastleigh and Old Edwardians suffered the opening day blues in Hampshire Division 2 - Fordingbridge crushing Eastleigh 5-1 and OEs crashing to a 4-0 defeat at United Services.
Hamble Old Boys have been drawn at home to Old Whitgiftians in the second round of the EHA Cup at Satchel Lane on Sunday October 14.
Andover host Phoenix & Ranelegh, City of Portsmouth play Oxted and Fareham play away to Crawley.
