Residents of Ryde, Isle of Wight, are to get the chance to comment on a wide-ranging set of proposals that would transform the resort's seafront.

The proposals are contained in a comprehensive development and improvement plan drawn up by specialist consultants commissioned by the Isle of Wight Partnership - the Island's economic development agency, and will be on show at a public meeting at Ryde Castle Hotel on the Esplanade at 7pm next Monday.

John Bentley, policy and strategy director for the partnership, said: "One of the key issues in our successful £6.25m Single Regeneration Budget bid for the town was the need for action to improve the seafront - most local people would agree that the Esplanade has seen better days.

"The aim of the plan is to revitalise the Esplanade area and maximise its potential without major redevelopment."

The proposals have been developed over the past three months in close conjunction with residents and businesses in the town. Key elements of the proposals include:

* Improving Western Gardens as a key public focal point

* Construction of a new transport interchange on the site of the present train and bus stations

* Creation of an Esplanade Walk with improved seating areas and signing to other sites

* Upgrading the area around Planet Ice and LA Bowl

* Improvements to the harbour

* Enhancements to North Walk and the area around the boating lake.

Councillor Ernie Fox said: "The next steps in taking forward the scheme will involve securing public support for the project and seeking funding."
