Middlesex's Anne Keothavong, this year's Wimbledon junior semi-finalist, pulled off one of the best wins of her career at a £50,000 tournament in Southampton yesterday.
Keothavong, the British number ten, beat top seed Seda Noorlander, world-ranked 207 places higher, 7-5 6-7 6-2 in the first round of the LTA Ladies Challenger tournament at the David Lloyd Centre in Frogmore Lane.
Hannah Collin is another top English player taking part in the tournament, one of the leading events for women players in the country.
Admission is free to local residents and members to see players who include Norlander's fellow countrywoman Kirstie Boogert plus 16-year-old rising star Kala Kanepi from Estonia.
Sussex girl, Julie Pullin heading the British challenge in a tournament offering world ranking points, was beaten in the first round by Angelika Roesch of Germany.
The tournament continues all this week with the final taking place on Sunday.
There will be courtside stadium seating and access to the viewing gallery.
Prominent tennis celebrities, including former British number one Jo Durie are providing commentary and interviews with the players.
