FOR the first and probably not the last time, the adverse weather conditions put paid to two of the North Hants Football League's scheduled fixtures. Southampton Arms' Hants Intermediate Cup third round tie at Hedge End was waterlogged, as was the league fixture between RS Basingstoke Res and Ludgershall Sports.
In Winchester City A's game against Andover New Street, both teams had slightly stronger sides than usual but as the 5-0 score suggests it worked more favourable for City.
It was one of those games that could have finished five apiece but for New Street failing to put away any of their chances. They made it difficult for the home side and contained them to a slender lead until they ran out of steam in the last quarter.
The lone first half goal came after 25 minutes when Jonathan Owen's fierce drive was deflected into the path of Matt Oxley who promptly rifled it home. They should have extended their lead 10 minutes after the break. Jon Mills was brought down by the keeper who was sent off from preventing a goal scoring opportunity, but Owen's spot kick was saved by the stand-in keeper.
He did make amends in the 73rd minute when his shot rebounded off the angle of the upright and crossbar. He reacted quickly to head wide of the keeper, his second came three minutes later and he went round the keeper to complete his hat-trick two minutes after that. Ina goalmouth scramble following a corner kick in the 89th minute, Simon Baghomien prodded in the fifth.
