Blithe Spirit , Chesil Theatre, Wichester

Meeting your husband's former wife is not always easy. When the previous incumbent, dead for several years, appears in spirit form and refuses to leave the marital home, the situation becomes impossible. When the writer of the piece is Noel Coward, the encounter can only lead to a great deal of laughter.

The central role of the larger-than-life medium, Madame Arcati is played with convincing aplomb by Toni Bergstrom, while Gary Nicholson is very much at home playing the urbane and witty Charles. Helen Grime, who plays wife Ruth has a fine time, as does Karen Fitzsimmons playing the ghostly other woman.

This production of Blithe Spirit, set in the stylish, sophisticated world of the twenties by one of the greatest of comic playwrights, is a good antidote to a dull December night. It generally succeeds in capturing the style and wit of the piece but could benefit from a little more pace and energy.

Blithe Spirit runs until 8th December at the Chesil Theatre, Winchester.
