OPERATORS of a controversial tipping site in East Wellow have been slammed for riding roughshod over Hampshire's waste regulations.

Bosses at J & W Waste Management Ltd have been ordered to stop all their operations at Woodington Farm and clean up the site.

An investigation into activities on the site is also to be launched amid fears that questionable dumping went on.

The company, which continued tipping after permission ran out in August, was condemned by members of the county council's regulatory committee.

They refused permission to allow the company to carry on tipping after hearing a catalogue of concerns over its behaviour.

Chairman councillor Phil Heath said: "I was appalled with the way this site had been used. I am worried not only by the overtipping but I wonder whether we should start investigations as to what has been tipped."

Committee members were told the company had failed to carry out a promise to pay for road improvements in exchange for permission to run more lorries.

Complaints had also been made by residents over mud and dust clouds caused by work on the site.

The Environment Agency is investigating whether any unauthorised material was dumped.

Local councillor Michael Woodhall said: "This site has caused us enormous grief.

"If the mineral operators of Hampshire feel they can get away with what this operator has got away with it does not bode well for the disciplines we impose as an authority."
