TALENTED teenager Steve Turner was top of the bill as the Lymington-based Lawrence Club had three boxers through to national semi-finals.
Fourteen-year-old Turner was in action at the Youth Championships in Chatham, Kent, where he put on a fine display against all the odds by outpointing much-fancied Darren Martin from the Foley club in Kent.
Martin had a reputation of being a hard hitter having stopped his last two opponents.
But Turner kept his cool, boxing at long-range, looking to counter each attack, which he did successfully. The Hampshire teenager hardly had a glove laid on him by a very frustrated opponent.
Turner now goes on to box in Bristol this Saturday in the national semi-finals
The Lawrence club was the venue last Saturday for the National Senior Novice quarter-finals, when the two Southern Counties boxers both won their bouts and go through to this Saturday's semi-finals in Hove.
First in the ring for was cruiserweight Mervyn Langdale, an office manager with Lyndon Scaffolding based in Fawley.
He used high height and reach advantage to box well behind his lead left hand, picking up points with his accurate jab and long right cross and winning on points against A Hinton from Bideford in Devon.
Next was Lymington's Tunisian-born welterweight, Karim Said, who has already won a national title with the club and is now going for his second.
His opponent was A Harris of Gloucester, but the contest only lasted half way through the second round with Harris being disqualified for persistent holding as a result of Said constant pressure and telling body shots.
Lawrence's next show will a dinner boxing show at the Masonic Hall in Lymington on Saturday, December 8, when topping the bill will be the club's England number two bantamweight, Ben Allen, plus full supporting bouts. Ex-World Middleweight champion, Alan Minter, will be the after-dinner speaker.
