A teenager killed on the M3 near Winchester on Sunday was the second to die in similar circumstances on Hampshire motorways in five months.
Daniel Surtees (19), from Upper St Helen's Road, Hedge End, was walking along the southbound carriageway near the Junction 11 exit to Twyford at 5.30am when he was in collision with an articulated lorry.
The 31-year-old driver, from Bovington, Dorset, was "devastated" and suffered severe shock, said Sgt Kory Thorne, who is leading the investigation.
"He received medical assistance at the scene and is now trying to help us piece together what happened," he added.
As drivers stopped to assist, there was another accident involving two cars--no-one was injured. The southbound carriage was closed for five and a half hours while police examined the scene.
Winchester traffic police are appealing for witnesses, especially anyone who may have seen Daniel, who was wearing a white shirt and dark trousers as he was walking on the motorway--ring them on 08450-454545 if you think you can help.
He was last seen three hours earlier in the Otterbourne area.
An inquest was opened at Winchester on Wednesday morning by Mid-Hants coroner, Grahame Short.
Daniel, who was studying at Chichester University, had attended Swanmore School and Taunton's College.
A keen rugby player--he had represented England Students at under-19 level and Hampshire at under-20s and he was a regular for his club, Eastleigh-based Trojans.
His parents said: "He was a smashing lad. He had his whole life before him and we shall miss him."
* A 21-year-old student from Waterlooville died on the M27 near Hedge End in July in a collision involving three vehicles--one a police car. None of the drivers is being prosecuted.
