HAMPSHIRE'S state-of-the-art cricket academy at the Rose Bowl is set to stage its first indoor six-a-side match this evening.

Southern Electric Premier League champions BAT Sports will play Havant in a 12-overs-per side match, starting at 8pm.

"We've been using the practice nets for several months now, but we've yet to try playing an indoor match in there," said Academy manager Raj Maru.

"The pitch is specially laid for indoor cricket, but before we can start using the Academy for indoor games, we need to see how the surface plays and decide on what colour balls to use."

Maru, who launches a county-wide indoor Under-16 competition at the Rose Bowl in the New Year, says players can expect a totally different game in the Academy.

"The playing area is substantially bigger than, say, Fleming Park and will require completely new tactics by the teams," he warns.

Admission to the Rose Bowl this evening is free.
