Davis Tackles veteran Terry Hiscock, enjoying his best year on the match circuit, scored his biggest victory of the season when winning the Dorset Stour Championships on the Lower Stour.

Hiscock and the likes of teammate Mickey Maidment were brought up fishing venues like the Dorset Stour and Hampshire Avon before the start of the still water revolution and the veterans are always difficult to beat on running water.

But nobody would have thought a weight of 50lb plus of big dace would still be possible in a match these days since the cormorant problems on the whole Dorset Stour has had a detrimental effect.

Hiscock, drawn on the Nutbush on the bottom end of the Ponyfields, took his spectacular bag of big dace averaging 8oz apiece on running line and the cork and quill float, fished in close on maggot to take 52lb 14oz of fish to the scales to win the Stour Championships trophy and £120 in prize money.

Nick King (Dorset Raiders) finished second with another cracking bag of both dace and roach for 34lb 3oz taken on maggot and stick float from the other end of the Ponyfields.

Geoff Charman adopted the unusual tactics of quivertip for his bag of 31lb 4oz of dace from the next peg to Hiscock with Eastleigh's Ray Hayward fourth with 29lb 4oz of roach and dace.

Others: S Hebdith (Todber Manor) 26lb 11oz, C Watts (Homestores) 22lb 11oz.

The Christchurch Angling Centre midweek open on the Match Lake at Broadlands saw the venue continue in its rich vein of form. Bournemouth Lodges Chris Albiston took a tremendous 67lb 1oz to the scales to top a string of big weights for this time of year. Albiston took 15 bream in the first two hours for 40lb on maggot, over ground bait down the middle before switching to the far bank and corn for the last three hours to add nine carp which, with the bream, saw Albiston weigh 67lb 1oz. Barry James finished second with 63lb 2oz of bream. Simon Barber finished third with a mixed carp and bream bag for 43lb from peg 19 with Davis Tackles' Mickey Maidment third with 38lb.

In all, the 21 competitors took a total of 490lb to the scales for an average of 23lb per man.
