Winchester & District AC's men have stamped their name firmly in the frame for team honours in the Hampshire Road Race League.

The in-form cathedral city club chalked up their second team win in the first three league outings at the Hayling 10 on Sunday.

George Hide spearheaded their attack, placing third in 56 minutes and 38 seconds behind race winner James Baker of Chichester Runners (53.58) and vet-45 Tim Hughes of White Horse Harriers (54.41).

Julian Mann was the next Winchester man home, finishing 17th (58.51) from 596 male finishers, with teammate Keith Dowson following up in 28th (59.55).

Southampton Running Club had their challenge dented by late withdrawals through illness and injury, but they still had 15 members to ensure a continued push for league honours with fourth team place.

Ian Crawford led their charge in 24th (59.32), followed by club triathlete Adam Bradford in 31st (60.19). Paul Carter finished tenth vet-40 and 47th overall in 61.43 and there was healthy back-up from Mike Smith (61.48), Graham McRobert (63.33), Alan Doney (64.17), Dave Carter (64.33), Richie Pearson (65.26), John McKenzie (69.19), Tony Brown (69.33), Gordon Whelan (69.43), Malcolm Knight (69.57), Dave Roots (70.04) and Kim Batten (70.19).

Lordshill Road Runners chose the Hayling event as their club championship race for 2001 and over 30 members took part - six of them achieving personal bests.

Graham Bungay took the men's honours in 59.18, ahead of clubmates Mark Thompson (61.18), Duncan Beck (63.04), Dick Baines (63.24), Steve Hegarty (63.35) and Paul Burnage (66.52).

Winchester & District also fared well in the women's event, finishing third senior team, first vet team and providing the individual runner-up in vet-35 Michaela McCallum (59.12).

Jane Livings of Wells City Harriers set the pace in 57.18 and two members of the host club Havant AC, Kathy Bailey and Jane Harrop, were third and fourth respectively.

Another Winchester vet-35 Beverley Edwards came sixth in 62.56, while Lordshill's trio of Sioux Thirtle (71.30), Helen Backshell (77.05) and Janet McGarry (77.16) were all well up in the 223 women finishers.

Jenny Richmond, the sole female representative of Southampton Running Club, clocked 78.51.
