TWO Hampshire police officers were hailed heroes today after rescuing a pensioner from her burning New Forest bungalow.
Sgt Bernadette Smith and PC Philip Deeprose rushed to the property at Everton near Lymington after 88-year-old Mary Hammond activated an emergency lifeline pendant around her neck.
The officers arrived at Old Christchurch Road just before 11pm to find the windows hot from the blaze.
Police believe Miss Hammond, who lives alone, had knocked something into the bars of an electric fire in her living-room, which had set the carpet and surrounding furniture ablaze.
After obtaining a key from a neighbour, the officers fought back choking black smoke to find Miss Hammond had collapsed and was barely conscious.
Sgt Smith and PC Deeprose managed to drag the pensioner out of the burning lounge to the garden.
Once outside, she was taken by ambulance to Royal Bournemouth Hospital suffering from the effects of severe smoke inhalation. Both officers also suffered the after-effects of breathing in the thick black smoke but were able to remain on duty.
Today Hampshire police spokesman Richard Horobin said: "Clearly these officers did a wonderful job and may even have saved this elderly lady's life."
It is understood both officers are now likely to be considered for a Chief Constable's commendation for their bravery.
Nextdoor neighbour Mia Bongers, who gave police the door-key, said: "The police were marvellous. When they opened the door, they were forced back by very thick smoke.
"But they got in under the smoke and dragged her out. She was conscious, but she had inhaled smoke.
"The ambulance and the fire brigade were all here very quickly and they were very, very professional."
Neighbours described Miss Hammond as a great friend, who had been an active member of the church and had done a lot to help with its fundraising over the years.
