SOUTHAMPTON could be about to increase their bid for Blackpool striker, Brett Ormerod to £1.5 million, according to Seasiders' boss, Steve McMahon.

It would match Wigan's offer for the 25-year-old who is the Second Division's top scorer.

Saints had tabled a £1million offer, though that was rejected last week.

McMahon said: "I understand Southampton may match Wigan's offer, but we have not had anything in writing from. We are waiting to hear from them."

Southampton chairman, Rupert Lowe, said that the club had not made a further bid, but added: "I will be talking to Gordon Strachan tomorrow after tonight's game and we will decide what to do.

"We will do what we think is right."

However Ormerod, with 18 goals to this name this season, has not scored in his last four outings.

And McMahon said: "I don't think this speculation is doing the lad any favours.

"I think it's no coincidence the lad hasn't scored in the last three or four games. Subconsciously it must been affecting him. What wouldn't affect him with all the speculation about him moving and the price tag."

McMahon knows the Blackpool marksman will have his sights on playing in the Premiership. The club have also received interest from Norwich and Blackpool.

"He's an ambitious lad and you can't blame him," said McMahon. "He's got a family to look after and, at this level, he's not going to make enough to last him through a life time. But if he gets a good move, who knows?

"It is still in the melting pot. We've had no other offers on the table."

Saints have also been linked with Brighton's 16-goal Bobby Zamora.
