POLICE inquiries were continuing today into the death of a Hampshire student who was killed while walking on the M3.
Dan Surtees, 19, of Upper St Helens Road, Hedge End, died after being struck by a lorry near Twyford Down early on Sunday morning.
Police have stressed their investigation is focusing on how Dan came to be on the southbound carriageway before the accident around 5.30am.
The lorry driver, a 31-year-old man from Bovington, near Wareham in Dorset, who stopped at the scene, suffered severe shock and was said to be devastated.
Other drivers also risked their own safety to stop and help protect the teenager.
Dan, an up and coming rugby player, was a former pupil of Swanmore School and Taunton's College in Southampton.
At the time of his death, he was a student at Chichester College and had played rugby for Portsmouth second team against Salisbury only on Saturday.
Police were today trying to piece together Dan's final movements. It is believed the teenager had last been seen in the Otterbourne area around 2.30am.
An inquest into his death is due to be opened in Winchester tomorrow, when the hearing is expected to be adjourned for further police inquiries.
