Ellen MacArthur was named the BBC South Sports Personality of the Year at the fifth annual BBC South Sports Awards.

She won the title for being the fastest and youngest woman to sail single handed around the world in this year's gruelling Vendee Globe.

MacArthur, who received 54.2 per cent of the vote, accepted the the award via satellite link from South America where she is currently based following her second place in the 5,188 mile Transat Jacques Vabre race.

Mark Powell from Hayling Island was presented with the SEC Young Sportsman of the Year after winning the World Youth Laser Championships earlier this year.

The ceremony, held at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton, was presented by BBC South Today's Sally Taylor and BBC Radio Solent Sports Editor Grant Coleman.
