Claus Lundekvam is racing against time in a bid to be fit for tomorrow night's Worthington League Cup fourth-round tie at Bolton.
The Saints defender picked up an ankle injury in Saturday's 1-0 win at home to Charlton in front of a new club record gate of 31,198.
He battled on heroically to see his side to their first victory in their new stadium but is now a doubt for the visit to the Reebok Stadium.
He said: "I am hoping I will be OK but it is quite sore. The good thing is that it is only bruising, rather than ligament damage.
"I went to clear the ball as one of their players came in. His studs were showing and I kicked into them.
"I went out before the start of the second half to try it out and to warm up and I thought it was not going to happen for me.
"But, as soon as I got going, the adrenaline took over and that got me through. The goal helped a lot. After that there was no way we were going to lose.
"It was a real crossroads game for us, one which could dictate how the season is going to go.
"If we had lost, we would have been cut adrift a bit so it was a massive game for the fans and for the players.
"It has given us a huge lift. At this stage of the season the result means everything to us and it reinforces our belief that we will pull clear.
"In the last couple of games we have played really well but not capitalised on it and we missed a few chances against Charlton too. It looked like it might be the same old story when their shot hit the post at the end.
"As he hit it I thought 'Please not again!' and I was so relieved to see the ball bounce clear.
"It looked as though the ball should have gone in but it didn't - and no-one can say we did not deserve that luck!"
