Plastik, The Joiners, 24 November

UNLIKE most bands, seemingly desperate to place themselves in one musical category or another, Plastik are refreshingly ambiguous when it comes to labelling themselves.

The homegrown three-piece, who play The Joiners tomorrow night, boast of a sound that "kicks at the door of arcane pop, frantic punk and delicately dirty glam, all dressed up with large doses of eye-watering three-way operatics". (Sounds worryingly like a cross between David Bowie and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, to me.)

In recent months, the band have been gigging around the country, while their latest demo, Neon, is allegedly going down a treat in alternative clubs as far apart as Leeds, London and Manchester. Recently, they've been taken on by Manchester-based management company Pronoun Management, who have given the likes of The Longpigs, Pulp and Richard Hawley a leg-up to the big-time. So watch this space...

* Plastik's gig at The Joiners starts at 10pm. Entry costs £4 with a flyer. For more information, call The Joiners on 023 8022 5612.
