THE famous yew tree in King's Somborne is losing its 'guardian' with the imminent retirement of borough councillor David Bloom.

The tree, standing in the centre of the village near to the Crown public house, is often called the 'wedding cake tree' because of its seven distinct tiers that end in a 'crown'.

Cllr Bloom has always cared passionately about the yew and several years ago spent his own money to fund a much-needed clipping exercise when the tree developed a distinctly shaggy appearance. The remainder of the money came in a grant from the borough council.

It costs about £200 to £300 every two years to keep the yew in shape.

Cllr Bloom, who is 73, intends to give up his council duties in the new year after 10 years, said: "The present owners are very conscious of their responsibilities to the tree and are going to get it back into good order shortly. I welcome that.

"The tree is featured on the Test Valley tapestry and people are always taking photographs of it. It is a famous landmark in the village."
