AFC TOTTON remain in pole position in the Jewson Wessex League thanks to a solitary Kevin Reacord goal at Christchurch.

But Ken Cunningham-Brown, manager of defending champions Andover, has sounded out a warning that his trophy-hungry Lions are back on the march.

Although Vince Rusher continued his unhappy knack of missing penalties, Andover still eclipsed high-riding AFC Newbury 1-0 at the Portway Stadium with Glen Damen heading the winner from a 59th-minute corner.

The Lions are still down in 11th spot but they have several games in hand and Cunningham-Brown warned ominously: "We had difficultly getting into our stride at first because the players were disappointed at not being promoted, but we're starting to play some good football."

Fleet leapfrogged Newbury into second with a 2-1 result at Brockenhurst but, according to disappointed Badgers' boss Chris Collinge, the wrong side won.

"We played the best we've done all season and battered them for 90 minutes, but a defensive mix-up in the last five minutes cost us dear," he said.

Matt Parkin's penalty miss, when his side were 1-0 down, didn't help matters and, although Brock eventually equalised with a well-worked Paul Sims goal, they were undone by an uncharacteristic John Bailey error late on.

Blackfield & Langley served up another improved performance at home to Lymington & New Milton but were floored 2-0 by Leigh Phillips and his namesake Brett.

Steve Wheatland missed the best chance for the second-to-bottom Watersiders, but secretary Doug Sangster is confident new manager Terry Smith will steer them clear of danger.

He promised: "We're regrouping and sorting ourselves out. It won't be long before we turn the corner."

Moneyfields clobbered Whitchurch 3-0 through Danny Hopkins, Calvin Hore and Neil Darnley, but it was neighbours Gosport Borough who stole the local spotlight with a mammoth 6-0 scoreline at Downton.

Graham Lindsey (2), John Cripps, Les Sharp (penalty), Stuart Hensman and substitute Neil Scammell tore the relegation strugglers to shreds.

Downton, though, fought every inch of the way and Borough press officer Jeremy Fox commented: "If determination counts for anything, they won't be the club to go down."

BAT's home showdown with Eastleigh fizzled out to a 0-0 draw and the points were also shared at Bournemouth where Neil Cole salvaged Bemerton a 1-1 draw after Poppies' Ryan Lucas had pounced on a goalkeeping mistake.
