Eastleigh'S railway network is set for a big boost, but it will be away from the mainline.

The mini-railway at the Lakeside Country Park has become so popular that it needs to spread its wings.

Since it was opened in 1992, the railway - which winds its way through the country park and features Thomas the Tank engine events - has attracted global interest.

It has drawn visitors from as far afield as Germany, America and Japan.

Now the Lakeside operators are hoping that Eastleigh Borough Council will give them the full steam ahead for their latest plans.

The council has received a detailed application from the Eastleigh Lakeside Railway for a tunnel over the track along the northern boundary of the country park.

Councillors will also be asked to consider a proposal to extend the existing station and railway building to provide a new workshop and engine shed for the miniature locomotives.

The application could go before Eastleigh local area committee on November 27.

Last year, the mini-railway attracted 50,000 visitors and this year's figures have already hit the 60,000 mark.

That number is bound to be boosted by the popular Santa Specials running on the two weekends before Christmas.

Over recent years there has been major upgrading of the facilities and track, which has been extended.

With Eastleigh having strong railway roots the Lakeside railway attracts many retired railworkers who like to bring their grandchildren along.

With such a big demand on its services Lakeside wants to bring even more comfort for its passengers by creating a small cafe as part of its expansion plans.
