A MAJOR overhaul of roads into Fareham could be on the cards in a bid to ease congestion on the borough's congested routes.
A year-long accessibility study found Fareham was coming under increased pressure from traffic caused by prolific housing developments in Gosport and could expect up to 45 per cent more cars on some major routes between the towns.
The study urges councillors to give top priority to a long-planned Stubbington bypass to relieve traffic jam hot-spots like Quay Street roundabout.
Council leader Sean Woodward said Fareham had repeatedly called for measures to ease the situation.
He said that the problem was getting worse and it was now time to make the Stubbington bypass a priority.
He added: "Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything planned to improve the clogged up traffic from Gosport getting across the Quay Street roundabout, but we are pressing for the missing fly-over link to improve west to east traffic at the roundabout."
The report recommends a number of measures be considered, including:
A direct bus link from Gosport to Segensworth.
Alterations at the A32 Gosport Road-Salterns Lane junction.
A travel awareness campaign to coincide with the launch of the LRT super tram system.
A detailed integrated transport study for Fareham town centre.
Interim part-signalisation of Longfield Avenue and Speedfields roundabouts in Newgate Lane in
Advance of main Newgate Lane improvements.
Members of the planning and Transportation committee will discuss the recommendations on Tuesday.
