GARY Jones' Andover pub team Blaizers must have been suffering from a bout of altitude sickness after going top of the first division in the ADSL for the first time after Sunday's 1-0 home win against Gary Sams' bottom-of-the-table Fire Station.
Jones however said that Blaizers must not get carried away with them being in pole position. "We've still got to play some very good teams but I would like to thank all the help we've had from Martin Reeves and Barry Ford for being in the position we are at the moment," he added.
Fire Station belied their lowly position with a spirited performance but Blaizers took the points thanks to Joe Belbin, who got an early birthday present with a superbly struck 30-yard winner but also owed much to Glen Ford for his vital goal-line clearance to deny Fire Station a point in the closing minutes.
Roger Purdue's Barton Stacey upset the form book as they made it six points out of six with a 3-2 away win against high-flying Fred Druce after Matt Belbin struck twice in the first 10 minutes. Pete Tunney's Fred Druce got a goal back before half time and they grabbed another goal in the second half but the damage had already been done, with Brendan Clarke re-storing the village side's two-goal advantage before the break when heading home from Jamie Elliott's corner.
Barton had a number of other chances to extend their lead but failed to add to their three goals, despite the efforts of Alex Iddles who had a fine game up front for the village side. They did however defend well to earn the points, despite Fred Druce grabbing their second goal.
It was Fred Druce's second successive defeat with them going out of the Hants Sunday Intermediate Cup the previous weekend when losing 4-1 away to Bournemouth side Burton.
The game was a lot closer than the score line suggests with the difference between the two sides being that Burton took their chances. Trailing 2-0 at half time, Fred Druce conceded a further goal from the penalty spot before they pulled one back with a superb header from Sam Rae but the home side put the game beyond Fred Druce with a fourth goal.
ADSL champions Ludgershall Sports were again on cup duty - Simon Poultney's side have played on three league games so far this season - chalked up another excellent win with when beating local rivals Swallow 3-2 at Astor Crescent in the first round of the Kelvan Inivitation Cup. Whewell and St Mary Bourne were drawn against Basingstoke opposition but both games were postponed.
In Martin Turner Cup, fourth division leaders Abbots Mitre followed the previous week's impressive showing that took them to the top with a 2-0 home win over Ian Price's third division strugglers Wyke Down, with Steve Jenkins scoring both goals in the second half to take his tally for the season to 10. Wyke Down had their chances but once behind they pushed more players forward and were caught out with Jenkins heading a superb second goal near the end.
Donnie Dolan's Vernham Dean also continued their impressive run after they beat Brian Austin's high-flying fourth division rivals Station Hotel 7-3 away in the Martin Turner Cup in a game highlighted by Simon Rose's incredible double hat-trick.
With the two sides due to meet in a crucial league encounter later this month, Vernham took an early lead - the first of four in the first-half from the outstanding Rose - and he was joined on the score sheet by fellow striker Andy Strong before netting another two goals after the break.
Back on the league scene, Pete Morton's Wallop Wanderers were a goal down to bottom-of-the-table Milton Lilbourne but eventually won 5-1 to move within a point of AC Point-to-Point at the top of the table.
Marc Dennis snapped Wallop's equaliser and Andy Lister put them ahead before the break. In the second half Wallop recaptured some of their early-season form after Dave Fudge bagged their third. Dave Ling slotted the the other two from the penalty spot.
Dave Millward and Chris Green's Leisure Centre team got their season back on track with their 4-1 home win against Crown Ludgershall. They rode their luck in the first half and were fortunate to gain a first-half lead through skipper Daryl Vince, but ALC improved in the second half and went further ahead with an impressive long-range strike to give Vince his eighth goal of the season.
The Crown finally finished off one of their many chances but the ALC too full advantage of their opponents' earlier profligacy in front of goal with two further goals of their own from Neil Barker and Darren Fluen, who ran half the pitch to chip the ball over the oncoming 'keeper.
Barton Stacey Res made hard work of their 5-1 win against Twinings, with the score line not really telling the story of what was a poor performance by the village side. Barrie Purdue's team never really got going but did enough to win with a hat-trick from Nic Turpin and a brace from his uncle Wayne Turpin. However, they owed much to 'keeper Rhys Betteridge who kept them in the game in the first half with a string of fine saves.
