AN ACCIDENT which resulted in a boy breaking his arm has prompted members of a Basingstoke community to call for a ban on parking on a busy road.

George Robinson, six, was crossing Abbey Road in Popley towards the shops with two 10-year-old friends when he was injured by a car.

His mother, Chris Cleary, said the boys were all holding hands to cross the road, but had to step back when a vehicle pulled out of the shop car park.

"Unfortunately, as George stepped back, his shoe came off," she said. "He ran back to get it and that is when he was involved in a collision with a car."

As a result of the November 1 accident, George broke his right arm and suffered bruising and scrapes to his head and side of his body.

His mother said she did not blame the driver of the vehicle involved.

"Cars should not be able to park there," she said. "They obstruct the view of drivers coming down the road.

"It is all too easy for a child to walk out between the cars and straight into the road."

Popley beat bobby Pc Matt Deery said the driver of the vehicle was not at fault.

"She was going below the speed limit, but still had no time to avoid the boy," he said.

The driver, Tracy Lomas, 28, of Melrose Walk, said the parked cars were the cause of the collision.

She said: "I know that area of the road is dangerous and am always careful driving along it. But I still did not see the boy run out on to the road."

She added: "Something has to be done about the cars parking there, before a child or elderly person is killed."

Ward councillor Jane Frankum said the area is a well-known danger spot in Popley.

She said: "We will be campaigning to have double yellow lines painted on that stretch of road."
