YOSHIKATSU Kawaguchi may not be a household name in this country yet, but with more performances like the one he turned in at Turf Moor, he soon will be.

Back in his native Japan, Yoshi has developed a celebrity status every bit the envy of a Hollywood movie star.

An entourage of Japanese journalists followed their national captain to Burnley where Kawaguchi once again shone between the Pompey sticks.

In only his second ever appearance in English football, Kawaguchi made a string of vital stops that helped Pompey to a deserved 1-1 draw in the north-west.

Kawaguchi later admitted his performance was mostly down to the way he has settled so quickly at Portsmouth.

He said: "I got a good feeling from the match, although I'm still adjusting to English football I thought this was better than last week."

Coming off the back of conceding just 26 seconds into his debut last time out, Kawaguchi can be rightly pleased at this display.

He was called into action within the first 10 minutes, having to dive bravely at the feet of Gareth Taylor to deny the big Welsh striker a shot at goal.

In the second half he leaped at full stretch to tip over a goalbound header from Ian Moore.

Despite his lack of inches, Kawaguchi made several athletic interceptions to palm away crosses and came through crowd of players to claim balls he was not always entitled to.

Manager Graham Rix was impressed with what he saw from the £1.8million record signing. He said: "Yoshi was excellent. His distribution was superb with both feet. He was quick off his line and made a great save in the second half."

Though there was nothing Kawaguchi could do after 69 minutes, when Paul Cook's pinpoint cross was emphatically dispatched by Taylor.

The Welshman's diving header looked to have set the tone for a Clarets victory, and without Kawaguchi's save from Moore a minute later, it might well have been.

But Pompey are made of sterner stuff on their travels this season and grabbed an equaliser on 72 minutes.

Dave Waterman fed a ball through a crowd of defenders and as Burnley appealed for offside, Peter Crouch took advantage of a fortunate richochet to prode the ball past Nik Michopoulos.

Rix was delighted to get another point away from home and praised the battling performance of his players.

He said: "Everyone has worked their socks off. There is a great togetherness, determination and spirit in this side and that showed today.

"We would have taken a point before the match and the way we played against a good team shows we have nothing to fear in this league."
