HUNDREDS of Portsmouth fans paid tribute to their Southampton-born goalkeeper, Aaron Flahavan, yesterday, laying floral tributes at Fratton Park.

Flowers, shirts, and scarves adorned the goal in front of the KJC Stand little more than 24 hours after the popular player was killed in a car accident in Bournemouth.

The 25-year-old's blue BMW 328 careered out of control and flipped across a dual carriageway on the A338 in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Flahavan's body was found lying about 25ft from his car, and police have said that an initial post-mortem examination revealed that he had died from a fractured skull.

Dorset police are currently carrying out tests to discover the cause of the accident.

The club announced yesterday that as a mark of respect they will not be allocating the number one goalkeeper's jersey this season.

There were calls among fans to retire the jersey altogether.

Flahavan was almost certain to start in Saturday's Division One opener at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolves have said they will pay their own tribute before the game.

"Nothing has been decided yet, but I'm sure there will be a mark of respect shown for Aaron," said a Wolves spokesman.

"We're just waiting on what Portsmouth would like to do."

Pompey yesterday called off a scheduled friendly with Havant & Water-looville at West Leigh Park which was to mark the opening of the non-league club's new stand.
