A MAN is recovering in Southampton General Hospital today after being stabbed several times in the shoulder and neck with a screwdriver.

Police said the man, aged 25, had been attacked in a flat in Atherfield Road, Millbrook, yesterday.

His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening and doctors have described his condition as serious but comfortable.

Detectives were hoping to speak to the victim in hospital this morning to gain a clearer picture about what happened.

Today Det Sgt Phil Jones, of Shirley CID, said: "Initial reports suggest the aggrieved had been stabbed several times in the shoulder and once in the neck with a small pointed article such as a screwdriver.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who may have information about the incident or what happened afterwards."

Police believe the victim, who has not been named, was attacked in a flat around 4pm yesterday.

It is understood he did not live at the address but is from the Southampton area.

Five people, including a woman, were believed to have been involved in the incident, after which they fled in two separate cars.

Police inquiries are focusing on a blue Ford Sierra, which was abandoned at Charlotte Place roundabout, and a black BMW which was stopped in Thomas Lewis Way soon after the attack.

Four people were today in custody being quizzed in connection with the stabbing.

Police confirmed three are from Southampton while a fourth is from the Reading area.

It is understood two had been arrested at the scene while the other two were arrested in a car shortly after the incident.

Detectives are anxious to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious in Atherfield Road, or noticed either car leaving the scene or near the Charlotte Place roundabout.
