THERE was something new in store for customers at a Chandler's Ford supermarket when they popped in to do their weekly shop.
In the foyer to greet them at Asda were officers from Eastleigh police, who thought the store's lobby would fit the bill as the ideal place to meet the public.
The store visit was just the start of the Bobby Lobby scheme, which will see local beat officers in the foyer at Asda on the fourth Saturday of every month.
Local residents will be able to talk face-to-face with officers about policing matters, as well as picking up advice.
Barbara White, crime reduction officer at Eastleigh Police, said the scheme launch on Saturday was a huge success.
She told the Daily Echo: "It's been really popular. We've had all sorts of enquiries, from crime prevention advice and car crime to domestic security, as well as people giving us information about crimes we're currently investigating.
"It's been great for building up a rapport with the children as well."
Pc Mike Cook, community beat officer for Fair Oak, said: "It's been excellent. People have asked all sorts of questions on topics like traffic, domestic violence and even customs issues. To celebrate the scheme launch, Asda donated a mountain bike, cycle helmet and lock for children to win in a spot-the-difference picture competition.
Greg Brown, publicity co-ordinator for Asda, said: "The customers have responded really well. I think they appreciated having a police presence in the store."
Police will be back at Asda on September 15, from 12pm-3pm.
