Chandler's Ford Age Concern is warning elderly people in the Eastleigh area to be on their guard against a suspected insurance scam.

The warning comes after the group's vice-chairman Bob Carey was telephoned at home by a man offering a complicated insurance policy before asking for his bank details.

Bob, 71, of Ashdown Road, Chandler's Ford, said: "He asked if he could interest me in a policy for 50 to 75-year-olds. He said if you have an accident we will pay out and if you die during the period of the policy you will get £2,000 and the return of all your premiums.

"But if you survive the 15 years of the policy they will return all your money."

The man asked for his banking details and at this point Bob became concerned and said he wasn't interested and called the police.

Insp Alistair Brand, of Eastleigh police, said: "Mr Carey did the right thing. I am not aware of this being a particular problem in Eastleigh but you should not give personal bank details over the phone to anyone."
