WORK has begun on the fantastic state-of-the-art Badminton Performance and Development Centre at Westgate School in Winchester.
Winchester MP Mark Oaten was among the guests for the turning of the first sod which marked the beginning of the £2.3m project, which should open in September, 2002. Sport England have funded the scheme to the tune of £1.8m.
Diana Troke, chairman of the Hampshire Badminton Association, said: "The ceremony went well. It was very well attended, with over 50 people turning out. I think it is a great achievement for the partnership of the Badminton Association of England and Westgate School to have come this far.
"It has taken us five years to reach this point of raising the first turf and we are very excited."
Highlighting the importance of the new centre, Troke added: "This is one of the first kinds of centres like this in the country. It will be the new headquarters of Hampshire badminton and will be superb for the sport on the south coast.
"All county tournaments will be played here, and we hope to stage international matches at the venue.
"It will have five courts, each with sprung wooden floors which are vital for the prevention of injury."
The school where the centre is situated will also profit from the development.
During term time, its pupils will have access to the facilities, which include international standard lighting, seating for 140 spectators, a physiotherapy and medical room and changing facilities. The centre will also be fully accessible for people with physical disabilities.
Steve Padfield of Sport England, the major financial backers of the project, said: "We are delighted to give our backing to this initiative which will benefit the school, Hampshire Badminton Association and the surrounding community."
