SIAN PORTER created a rare milestone in national golf when she won the English Girls Under-13 Close Championship at Bristol & Clifton.

The 13-year-old Lordshill girl's success came just two years after her brother, David, won the Carris Trophy, the English Boys' under-18 strokeplay title.

David has won three national age group titles in all, and mum Lynfa said: "It was must be very unusual for a brother and sister to win national titles. I'm so proud of them.

"I think Sian only started playing golf because David did so well. Now she's very enthusiastic and very focused on her game."

To take the title the Wellow club champion had to come through an 18-hole medal qualifying round and then take her chances against the other top 31 players in four rounds of matchplay.

She had a particularly tough semi-final opponent in Kirsty Law from Evesham who fought back from four down to one down to set up a nail-biting finale at the last where the Southampton girl held her nerve to take the hole and make the final.

There she met Hannah Moul from Colchester and another fast start saw Porter three up through nine. Moul won the 13th to close the gap, but Porter hung on to her advantage to win the match and the title 2 & 1. Within hours of victory she was on her way to Yorkshire to support brother David who is captaining England Boys in the Home International Championship.

l Two Hampshire golfers were in dazzling form on the European PGA Tour yesterday. Steve Richardson put a nightmare season behind him with a stunning six-under-par 66 in the second round of the Scandinavian Masters.

The former Ryder Cup man reached the turn in 29, six under, then played the back nine in 37 for a halfway aggregate of four under par - good enough to lift him 100 places up the field and into the top 20 after a first round 74 - two over. There wasn't much joy for Justin Rose, though. At one over, the 21-year-old North Hants clubman looked likely to miss the cut.

Southampton's Richard Bland produced the round of the day in the BMW Russian Open in Moscow - an eight under par 64 which lifted him into the top ten in the European Challenge Tour event. It was a flawless round of eight birdies and no dropped shots.

But there was sadness for Hampshire hopefuls Martin Young (Brokenhurst Manor) and Ben Cummings (Basingstoke) in the quarter-finals of the English Amateur Championship at Saunton. Young lost 5 & 4 to Ricky Blaxhill, Cummings fell 4 & 3 to Scott Godfrey.
